The title of this zine directly references its photographic content. ESCRITO EN PIEDRA (“Written in Stone”) is a collaboration between Ecuadorian artists Adrián Balseca and Francisco Baquerizo, which takes as its subject works created by painting on stone in rural areas. Sometimes just a single word or illustration, these square-format photographs highlight the ability of stone to become the canvas for works that are ultimately public art, but which are displayed within more secluded, and therefore less frequented, areas.
The political nature of these works, which reference institutions and rights such as the police and voting, recall the artists’ opening statement: “Ideologies, campaigns, dogsmas, promises and defeats. Images are left behind, and although the direction in which we move is uncertain at the end, the future isn’t written.”
