Produced on the occasion of Printed Matter’s 2017 Fall Benefit, Women Testing is composed of layers of vintage, black-and-white photographs of nude women engaged in various bodily movements. These full body portraits of women interacting with their own forms represent a type of freedom Winant works to emphasize within her overarching artistic practice, related to the task of “picturing liberation,” with all its subsequent difficulties and possibilities.

Artist and writer Carmen Winant (b. 1983 in San Francisco) has been described as a photographer who does not author her own pictures. Drawing on found and archival images to create narratives surrounding female experience—pleasure; pain; childbirth—and to ignite conversations surrounding violence, submission, and the question of whether it is possible to “picture” liberation, Winant produces work on a scale that matches the beauty, difficulty, and necessary imagination of her thematic interests.
Carmen Winant has exhibited both nationally and internationally at the Worcester Museum of Art, Massachusetts, 14a, Hamburg, Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, Stene Projects, Stockholm, Aperture Foundation Gallery, NYC, and Sculpture Center, NYC. In 2018, Winant’s work My Birth was exhibited in MoMA’s Being: New Photography exhibition. In 2019, Winant was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography.
