This enigmatic piece by Richard Tuttle is based on an artist’s book project from the same year, which involved director Chen Shi-Zheng and Anne Waldman and sought to combine theater and bookmaking to “explore and explode the genre.” Created as a fundraising edition for Printed Matter, Tuttle’s print features color photocopy on vellum and letterpress printing by Kaldewey Press on Fabriano Cotton Rag. Two printed sheets are stacked one atop the other, fixed into position along each edge with narrow strips of red Kozo paper. Depicted on the recto is Shi-Zheng wearing a bizarre, constricting facial contraption with Waldman’s text floating as thoughts above his head: “I am like a modern fortuneteller…Words coming from my mouth are feminized…one word can start a war.”
