Storytelling Sovereignty is a framework (created by noyekim) that expounds on the importance of BIPOC being in utmost control of their narratives, stories, and histories. While #representationmatters is often used as a catalyst to increase our storytelling, it often fails to recognize the power dynamics at play and the white supremacist society we live in: we must be able to tell our stories radically, unapologetically, and fully, in a way that ultimately celebrates us. This is a framework that also takes into account imagination politics, or that those with the greatest proximity to the norm are often those who get the greatest platforms, and thus whose art gets the most attention. Art, however, should be radical and controlled by those most marginalized if it is to affect change. Storytelling Sovereignty seeks to help BIPOC dismantle these harmful practices throughout creative mediums (media). While this guide also aims to help white folx see their own privilege; how they can give up power and access and indeed support BIPOC art and creativity; its end goal is freedom: that we should be able to tell our own stories, eventually, without any white gaze whatsoever.
