“Welcome to this third issue of Women in Print. In putting together each issue I often think about whether I should devote each one to a particular theme. This has proven difficult to do. In researching how women are portrayed in print, I find so much interesting material that I can’t seem to limit myself to just one topic. This issue is a perfect example: I jump from a 1987 Soviet-era fashion pamphlet to the early ‘80s Esprit ads, and from the Virginia Slims’ long-running ad campaign “You’ve Come A Long Way Baby” to a collection of World War II venereal disease posters. I don’t foresee ever being able to settle on a theme except for one: women in print.”
