“As part of an ongoing visual exploration and attempt at reinventing the legacy of utopian thought, I have established a narrative that speaks to the concept of our unfulfilled desire to create a perfect society and ecological World. Throughout history we have been exposed to romanticized literature of exploration, National Parks, natural history museums that attempt to mediate our relationship to the natural world, in reality it is the distorted memories, -abandoned spaces and fragments from the past, present and future and their coexistence that inform my study of a social consciousness in transition between place and non-place.
These stories are told through small edition art books presented as nuanced souvenirs, travel guides and documentation of unknown destinations. The act of capturing images, observation, sketching and note-taking are an important part of the initial fieldwork. These components are later abstracted, obstructed, rearranged and exaggerated into the unknowable. This systematic process sets the stage to examine our questions and aspirations for utopia. We might ask; are: utopias meant to be large-scale endeavors? Human history is full of smaller utopian communities that can be vulnerable and short-lived, yet their impact can last much longer. These micro-environments, although subject to change or extinction, often provide a platform where people can experiment with new or -forward thinking and social practices that challenge and inspire on a broader scale.
This type of frailty can also play into our fascination with Utopias. They are hard to sustain in the real world and could ultimately become a"non-place” and start to take on a more theatrical, unknowable, eerie presence. The small edition art books that I make engage in this type of dialect and are realized as relevant, yet fictitious visions that some might consider to be a post utopian outlook.“ - The artist
