These zines and artist’s books are by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders from the 14th Street Y After School Program made with Citation Needed Press, an experimental publishing initiative, dedicated to fostering the creations of young artists in the form of artist’s books. Now featured in a window display at Printed Matter / St Marks through the end of July.

These books are all part of 2024 Citation Needed Edition.

Citation Needed is an intergenerational publishing initiative, supporting the creation and production of artist books by 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Through a weekly workspace, participants generate individual and collaborative books, utilizing photocopiers, typewriters, and a range of drawing materials. Citation Needed provides project-based arts experiences for children while amplifying their voices through the printed matter and book arts. This initiative is led by artist Ari Wolff, in collaboration with the 14th Street Y After School and culminating in a series of published books, available for purchase at Printed Matter / St Marks.

Embracing chance as a creative force, many of the works produced in this class were inspired by unexpected accidents. After months of dedicated creation, editing, printing, and binding, the authors and illustrators are eager to share their meaningful work, honoring their inner worlds, autonomy, and ability to challenge oppressive systems and societal expectations.
