The artists’ book Pengel depicts an extensive research highlighting Stuart Robles de Medina’s work on a bronze sculpture of Surinamese Prime Minister Johan Adolf Pengel (1916-1970) in the years leading up to Surinamese independence. The sculpture was revealed on Independence Square exactly 50 years ago, in 1974. As the grandson of the sculptor, Xavier Robles de Medina was not only interested in preserving the personal memories that shaped his artistic practice but also in spreading knowledge about the history of Surinamese democracy and political activism linked to art. The book replicates a family photo album, meticulously documenting the creation of the sculpture, and is completed by interviews and conversations of family members. -Publisher
