Using field recordings as compositional elements, XIU XIU created drawing music for Hilma af Klint. This cassette was a special release for Printed Matter’s 2019 New York Art Book Fair and was an extension of the project DRAWING HILMA AF KLINT: A COLORING BOOK INSPIRED BY THE WORK OF HILMA AF KLINT by Ariel Dill, Amanda Friedman, and Denise Schatz.

The process of making the drawings for the coloring book was influenced by af Klint’s experiments in shared mediation and meditation and were collaboratively produced by the artists on three sunny afternoons in April 2014. “At the time we hoped to bring attention, in our own small way, to an artist we were in awe of but who had remained overlooked. We felt the collaborative nature of a coloring book would invite others to connect with the intentions of her work. We made a second edition in 2019 in collaboration with SITUATIONS Gallery during af Klint’s groundbreaking exhibition at the Guggenheim.”

XIU XIU’s For Hilma extends a sonic connection to ears, minds and pencils. Each side is 27 minutes long.
