Skull Bunny Shopping Bag by Richard Prince was produced by Printed Matter and Art Metropole in 1991. This image has made appearances in Prince’s paintings, trucker hats, a surfboard, a limited edition portfolio, and in a monograph. A commentary on consumer culture and fine art, specifically in regards to sex and pornography, the image points towards the dark underbelly of these very industries.
Richard Prince is an artist (b. 1949 in Panama Canal Zone) concerned with appropriated images, using them to raise questions about authorship, ownership, and theft. Over the course of his career, Prince has developed a complex understanding and investigation of the American identity, which he dissects through tropes and iconography. Prince has received major solo exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Museum Boymans–Van Beuningen, among many others.
