Pat McCarthy eloquently lays out the forcible nature of zines in his introduction to Chariot de Papier #1:
“Trading stories is a universal need, and next to speaking, paper is the most humble tool of communication. […] The back and white photocopier plays an integral role – transforming drawings, photos, text into charmingly crude echoes of their physical manifestations, glorifying the flaws of the hand and reducing and refocusing our visual palette into barebone aesthetiques.”
An exploration of engines and photographic technology ensues throughout the zine, which provides tongue-and-cheek stats on each machine atop xeroxed images of it being used by children in experimental ways. Chariot de Papier #1 was produced in tandem with Pat McCarthy’s exhibition BRICK BY BRICK, held in Spring of 2016 at the Fonds régional d'art contemporain in Marseille, France.
