AND PER SE AND is an artist’s book by Gordon Hall produced as part of Shifters, an exhibition of commissions, projects, and performances that brought together a group of emerging contemporary artists whose practices are engaged with language.
In AND PER SE AND, Hall manipulates a series of small-scale sculptures composed in open-ended “object sentences.” These objects, scaled to the artist’s hand, reference recognizable forms without settling on one definitive identity, prompting questions such as: “what are they for?” or “how do I read this?” The choreography photographed focuses on points of contact—and is interspersed with short chapters of research, memoir, and speculation structured around Hall’s hands as they hold, arrange, and grasp each of the sculptures. -Art in General
