“When I look at a Louise Nevelson sculpture I think about the way she described eating raisins. She would not eat raisins by the bunch but singly and selectively. ‘When I put a raisin in my mouth I know what I’m doing.’ This single statement expresses a mindfulness about living in the world that I see reflected in her work.
These thoughts about Nevelson were brought about by reading an interview with her. I’ve always loved the direct interview form, where the content reflects a conversation. The archives of the Paris Review are a goldmine of such material.
Eliza Swann interviewed me for Arthur Magazine in 2011. I loved the conversation that resulted from the meeting of our minds. Inspired by these results I wanted to document many of the ideas that have been shaped through conversations with close friends of mine. All of the people interviewed in this zine have affected me in a profound way, largely through our discussions. This zine is a time capsule of these exchanges.
This project took over two years to complete. I thought it would take me about three months when I started it. It took the time it needed to take. There are many more friends that I could have interviewed, but I had to stop at a certain point or this would never have come out.
