This numbered collector’s copy of Daring Durea is letterpress printed by Dikko Faust, and leads the reader through Norman Shapiro’s stream of Jungian consciousness. A short text from the artist on the first page illuminates the content—”pornographic images directing messages to my groin.” Within the accordion-folded pages, Shapiro muddles sexual organs and scenarios within and outside skewed frames. Although the figures are accompanied by text bubbles, they all remain empty in hopes of further hand-coloring or collage by the artist, or perhaps an original narrative by the reader. This book renders archetypal representations of sex and foreplay, making it abundantly clear that Shapiro’s fantasies have a long, strong resonance.
