Before and After is a reproduction of Ulises Carrión’s first work, printed and published by Boekie Woekie, including an essay by Raul Marroquin. Ulises Carrión is one of the most prominent Mexican Conceptual Artists, best known for his redefining of the artist book form. In Before and After, Carrión takes text from various sources, and changes select words, or slightly reorganizes sentences so that the original passage takes on a completely new, and often opposing meaning. Both humorous and poetic, Before and After is an anticipatory work for the conceptual art movement and avant-garde publishing.
Boekie Woekie is an Amsterdam based publisher. Since the 1980’s, Boekie Woekie has been producing artist books and poetry as well as holding readings and exhibitions in their gallery space. A mainstay at art book fairs all over the world, Boekie Woekie continues to serve as a platform for both Amsterdam and international artists.
