Christian Marclay explores the fusion of fine art and audio cultures, transforming sounds and music into a visible, physical form through performance, collage, sculpture, installation, photography, and video. This is the second installment of a three-part magazine series published by the Whitney during the course of Christian Marclay’s summer 2010 exhibition, which was conceived, according to curator David Kiehl, in an “improvisatory, spontaneous spirit” that extends to the Festival publication.
Although the structure of the magazine is intentionally loose, each issue seeks to address a certain theme. This second issue the second addresses the artist’s early work and discusses the performances taking place at the Whitney, providing an introduction and a set of images for each of the artist’s five musical Portfolio works, detailed performance notes, and a selected performance chronology. This thoughtful and creatively packaged document captures how this artist’s compelling practice has evolved over time and continues to expand and develop.
