Notating the Cosmology 1973-2008 is a compendium of drawings, diagrams, and texts illustrating artist Matt Mullican’s world view and charting its evolution from exploratory articulations in 1973 to a more refined and fully-realized symbolic language. Sketched out on sheets of cream-colored graph paper, Mullican’s work is laid out so as to clarify his ideas and to offer the reader an intimate reading of his cosmology, which involves Fate’s lever, battles between demons and angels, a semicircular room containing a stairway to Heaven and passageway to Hell, and other such images that seem to have been imagined in a dream or realized through hypnosis. The book works as an inventory of notes, diagrams, sketches, texts and signs - a flow of language that allows Mullican to place his ideas in a much larger map that implicates all of humanity.
