The Native (A Room Painting), a pamphlet-book from 1989, was created to accompany an exhibition for a painting piece, and in this way was thematically similar to other pieces Kennedy produced around this time (such as Moving Stills). The painting featured colored swatches and patterns covering every wall of the space, and the written information catalogued within the book is a listing of every paint color used. Each color in the piece made reference to some aspect of Native American history. The non representational wall painting and the text in the book work in tandem to give a heightened focus to communication: an operation between the visual work and the text, and the significance of those terms in a supposedly postmodern, postcolonial world.
