Long Range Forecast: Variable is one of a collection of Artspeak publications that present parallel projects between artists and writers. This book is an extension of the exhibition of Robin Arsenault’s work entitled here you should read (that something is awry) in which she used props and pully systems to move drawings and sculptures of clouds around the gallery space. Her cartoon-like clouds are reproduced on the front of the book, raining their graphic contents down over its gray fold-out cover. Inside, Leannej’s writing comes folded up like an explanatory map. In the clinical format of a flow chart she tells stories of psychological experiments performed on people and animals, often to devastating effect. Interspersed with the facts of each case are her own poetic riffs and interrogations of the scientific method. Both writer and artist seem to have at least one foot on the ground and a healthy portion of their heads in the clouds. An elegant and quirky collaboration.
