REPOhistory, Cultural Arts Council of Houston and Harris County was invited to Houston, Texas to create a temporary public art project. This document, structured like a fold-out map and collaged with text, documentary photography, and topographical maps of the area, explores the process of urban growth and redevelopment and brings light to forgotten or suppressed narratives through cognitive re-mapping.
In particular, REPOhistory examines seven layers of development history from the corner of Preston and LaBranch streets, the current site of the abandoned King George Hotel in downtown Houston. This structure is across the street from a homeless shelter and is one block away from a major redevelopment project planned for a new baseball stadium and next to the Rice Hotel, a building being converted into expensive loft living spaces.
