edições tijuana - são paulo, brasil
by tijuana
Tijuana started in 2007 as an initiative of Galeria Vermelho (São Paulo, Brazil) to create an exhibition space to show works, especially artist´s books, that didn’t fit smoothly into traditional exhibition spaces.
In 2009, Tijuana inaugurated the first Printed Art Fair in Latin America, uniting publishers who are dedicated to artist´s books and special editions.
Starting in 2010, Tijuana has been publishing its own editions through the label Edições Tijuana.
Initially occupying a space within the gallery, after a few years Tijuana got its own space: the Tijuana newsstand opened in 2013

The first book made by Edições Tijuana in this table is "Nunca", by Mariano Ullua.
Mariano is from Mar del Plata, Argentina. In 2010, visiting São Paulo, Mariano shown us a sketchbook - just like the artist book we end up publishing. In his sketchbook, Mariano made cycle diagrams about time passing, relativity, memory. All the drawings were made by pencil on cotton paper. Besides, not only the diagrams were cycles, but also the book itself: when you finish turning the pages, the book starts over on the back. It's infinite.
Mariano wanted to reproduce copies of that sketchbook as similar as possible to the original. We had a hard time trying to find a printing technique which could preserve the simplicity of a pencil on paper. Back to Mar del Plata, Mariano and his friends (from the residency program Mundo Dios) adapted a plotter Moritzu UC 800 F, replacing the cutting blade with 2B graphite on Fabriano Accademia 220g paper.
The result is an edition of 70 copies printed with graphite on paper, just like the original. The title "Nunca" means "Never".
