Cholo and gang culture arrived in Mexico in the 1990s due to the deportation of thousands of illegal immigrants to Mexico from the United States. The Mexican hoods adopted the cholo culture as its own right away, which continues to be one of the most present countercultures to this day.
Magazines such as Estilo Mexicano and Mexican Nacion helped the culture grow and feel more united.
It was a source of pride to be able to show yourself to the world in the magazine. It was a platform that gave rise to self-representation.
