The Other Horses zine was self-published with softcover in 200 copies using an offset printing press in Lahore, Pakistan. The zine explores the special relationship between horses and their caretakers during the Shabih-e Zuljinaḥ processions in Lahore, Pakistan. It is part of an ongoing project that captures the subtleties of scale in the world created around the Zuljinah, an animal at the centre of the procession that provokes diverse reactions among those who witness it. While some look upon it with reverence due to its sanctity and a few with deference as something sacred for a community of believers, many still view it with suspicion and hostility. The procession is a vital part of the mourning rituals of the Yaum-e Ashura and is emblematic of the Shia community in Pakistan and within Islam historically.
Ali’s photographs offer a glimpse into the human activity that the procession engenders and the community that comes together during Ashura to connect with each other and their common history. -Publisher
