“Spread the art,” Margaret says, and that’s exactly what we have always tried to do with Installments. Affordable, unique, mixed media books that you can’t read. Sometimes I call these pop-up books for adults. For this, our 18th edition, “We supersized it” says Aaron. These began when Margaret amazing, old-school circular teaching tool/pages to use as the folios. These wild round pages set the stage for our collections of overflowing bits to form new stories, new compositions. This edition includes mid-century stamps, personal photos from the 2000s, and loads of collages and ephemera.
The series began as an experiment in mail art-and-bookmaking. We finished grad school together at SUNY Purchase where we worked side-by-side for two years. I knew when she was watching old episodes of Seinfeld and cutting, cutting, and gluing, because she was quiet. I owe her an apology for not always wearing headphones while listening to a mix of Kesha and Dinosaur Jr. You can see the mash-up of 90s television and power-pop, as well as our mutual love of faded glory, in each new edition.
