This 14 color screenprint and fundraising edition by Printed Matter Director Max Schumann features original hand painting. Each work is unique, numbered and signed.
For many years Schumann has maintained an outsider painting practice indebted to the Cheap Art Movement, often working in acrylic on simple cardboard sheets. With a post-Pictures Generation approach to working from mass media, Max’s expressionist painting style reworks snapshots sourced from television, film, newspapers, adverts, and other print material. The paintings focus on banal scenes of flowers and pastoral countryside, as well as SUVs, high rises and predator drones, frequently accompanied by short text statements painted directly over the imagery. Taken together, the work offers a critique of the dark energy at the heart of American politics, consumerism and capitalism.
Produced on occasion of the Printed Matter 2023 Benefit Dinner and Bash.
