Interchangeable mylar (3parts)_printed matter version, 2022
3 – 16 color silkscreen prints on acetate in custom board portfolio
Artist Kerstin Brätsch has produced a new limited edition artwork on the occasion of Printed Matter’s 2022 NY Art Book Fair.
Based on the artist’s 2015 series, Glow Rod Tanning with … the body of work was originally described by the artist as “a massive multiplication (and therefore creation, obfuscation, and perpetual annihilation) of the self”. The 16-color silkscreen edition follows the same formula of the original series; three transparent prints can be layered in order to create many variations of a wildly animated character. Brätsch’s work often incorporates expressive creatures who are psychically and socially gifted, and who stare directly at the viewer. Using what feels like a limitless and cumulative palette of vibrant colors, Brätsch presents a complex body that embraces its fluid existence and its many selves.
Kerstin Brätsch (b. Hamburg, Germany) currently lives and works in New York and Berlin. Brätsch works both autonomously and in collaboration with other artists, as part of DAS INSTITUT (with Adele Röder, from 2007) and KAYA (with Debo Eilers, from 2010), as well as other collectives, including UNITED BROTHERS (Ei and Tomoo Arakawa). Brätsch has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including the Serpentine Galleries, London (2016) as DAS INSTITUT; Museum Brandhorst, Münich (2017); and Fondazione Memmo, Rome (2018) . Recent site-specific commissions by Brätsch include the large-scale outdoor permanent artist commission MEMORY, 2021, at LUMA, Arles (2021) and the multipart Fossil Psychics for Christa in the Terrace Café at The Museum of Modern Art (2019). Among many awards and accolades, Brätsch received the second edition of the Edvard Munch Art Award (2017), the Villa Romana Residency in Florence, Italy (2019 - with her collective KAYA), and most recently the Helen Frankenthaler award for painting from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts, New York as well as the Guenther Peill Price, Germany (both 2020). Brätsch’s work is currently featured in the 59th Venice Biennale, The Milk of Dreams and two solo shows: at Ludwigforum Aachen, Germany and Leopold Hoesch Museum Düren, Germany.
