For 500 years, in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, every September 24, the day of the Virgin of Mercy, a pilgrimage is made and each family builds its own “Panzudo” that represents sins: the more a person has to atone, the bigger and uglier his outfit will be.
Between texts and images, this photobook takes us through the tunnels of the domestic space to explore its psychological density and the complexity of childhood, fusing it with pre-Hispanic traditions and apocalyptic visions of the Catholic religion.
This series addresses from a contemporary perspective the cultural syncretism that marks the history of Mexico. The Panzudos continue to dance every year through the streets of San Cristóbal de las Casas, now with Halloween masks, Chinese fabrics, creating new characters from the current Mexican imagination. -Publisher
