Our newest glass case display at Printed Matter Chelsea, Thirty Years: The Artists’ Books of Jasper Sebastian Stürup 1994–2024 examines the three-decade anniversary of Stürup’s artist book practice, spanning sixty-three limited edition books published primarily through his own imprint, Fluens Forlag, and others including Lubok Verlag. A new artists’ book by Stürup, Frozen Lakes and Lightning, 2024, is published by Printed Matter on the occasion of this anniversary. The structure of the book is inspired by Frans Masereel’s image-based book The Idea, 1920, as an homage by Stürup. Starting and ending with the artist in the studio, between the pages of the artist’s book is a dream reality of what goes on in the atelier––as a private space of creation––both existentially in the mind and through the physical body.

Jasper Sebastian Stürup lives and works in Copenhagen. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BA) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen (1999). His work is in collections including ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj; Design Museum Danmark, Copenhagen; Horsens Kunstmuseum, Horsens; Malmö Konstmuseum, Malmö; New York Public Library, New York; Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York; National Gallery of Denmark (SMK), Copenhagen; New Carlsberg Foundation, Copenhagen; Statens Kunstfond, Copenhagen; Sorø Kunstmuseum, Sorø; Stavanger Kunstmuseum, Stavanger; Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong; Trapholt – museum of modern art, craft, and design, Kolding; among others.

Stürup’s work explores figuration and the everyday in life – the personal, coupled with his surroundings and continuing fascinations. Spanning drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, video, and artist’s books, his oeuvre emphasizes the sensitivity of the drawn line as a central aspect of his practice. His imagery, composed of fragile, reduced lines, depicts figures from his own sphere along with music, art, avant-garde film and poetry. Figures appear alongside myriad objects and flora and fauna, derived from both life and his library of images.
