We’re very pleased to be participating in the Material Art Fair, a new contemporary art fair dedicated to emerging practices in Mexico City. The Printed Matter booth (C2) will feature a selection of artists’ books and debut a new fundraising edition by Iñaki Bonillas.
The Material Art Fair is located at the Hilton Mexico City Reforma in Mexico City’s Centro Histórico, featuring 40 national and international exhibitors noted for their support for younger artists.
On the occasion of the Material Art Fair we are pleased to publish a new fundraising edition, Transparencies, by Mexico City-based artist Iñaki Bonillas. The work features a set of 6 silk-screens printed double-sided on semitransparent paper. Borrowing images from source books on 16th and 17th Century painting, the black and white prints replicate the curious effect whereby an image from the reverse side of a page inadvertently shows through the artwork at hand. Taken from well and lesser known Renaissance works, the prints show paired scenes of domestic life – embracing couples, decorative glasses, details of hands – as well as still lifes and country landscapes. As though uncovered by radiograph, each image gives way a second buried work that suggests a deeper meaning.
Transparencies is published in an edition of 20 + 5 APs. Each print measures 38 x 55 cm, with each set presented in a custom made folio. The work is accompanied by a signed and numbered certificate, and retails for $900.
The work is available at the Material Art Fair or through the Printed Matter website here. Published with the assistance of Productora and Taller de Comunicación Gráfica.
Material is an initiative of Daniela Elbahara and Brett W. Schultz, co-directors of Mexico City’s Yautepec Gallery, and Isa Natalia Castilla, founder of Incontemporary. Please see here for more information.
