Join us at Printed Matter / St Marks on Saturday, July 30 at 5PM for A study in/on performance, an event with Kwamé Sorrell. This program is created by the artist in response to Printed Matter’s exhibition by Yusuf Hassan — a symphony a work in progress. The show is currently on view in Printed Matter’s 11th Avenue exhibition space, and continues with works on view in the St Marks bookstore.

About the event:

A typical symphony contains four distinct sections called movements, and each movement has its own defining features. Together, the movements tell a musical story in much the same way chapters of a book tell a story.

To perform; considering the vulnerability of the performer. There is a sense of embarrassment that goes into displaying one’s vulnerability, in the act of performing. This embarrassment can be a moment of awareness of the performer, “a movement”. With a focus on the repurposed theory of “a movement” in classical music, as catalyst to building narrative or story, Kwamé Sorrell will explore through film and poetry the defining features (feel/look/sound) of “a movement” in relation to performing.
