Thank God For Abortion is a zine by artist Viva Ruiz. In 2015, Ruiz began her project Thank God For Abortion in response to the closing of abortion clinics throughout the United States. She makes t-shirts and actively organizes protests and actions with the mission to destigmatize abortion in the United States. Her approach to creating awareness is through an unapologetic assertion of a person’s right to choose whether or not to have an abortion. Her goal is to shift the dialogue about abortion away from a conversation about “sin” and morality and toward a conversation centered around the liberation and support of marginalized people, who are most affected by the restriction of abortion in the United States. Included in this zine, are black and white photographs of people wearing Ruiz’s Thank God For Abortion T-shirts, a reproduction of her mission statement, as well as information regarding the implications of restricting abortions.
Viva Ruiz is an artist and activist who lives and works in New York City. Through the project Thank God For Abortion Ruiz makes T-shirts, tote bags, and zines to raise awareness and support for the right to a safe and legal abortion.
