Published in the Midwest with a bent towards a wider scope, BAT offers an alternative venue for critical discussion about art, theory and culture by artists and other involved members of artistic communities. Highlights of this issue include, “A Tour of the Monuments of the Prosaic After Robert Smithson” by John Neff, a road trip diary to site like Michael Heizer’s Double Negative and Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty with careful consideration of in between occurrences, and “Against Competition” by Marc Fisher, member of the collective Temporary Services, which acknowledges that antagonistic relationships can bear creative fruit (quintessential example of Klaus Kinsky and Werner Herzog), but ultimately encourages artists to find ways to work together and make room for similar ideas in the interest of fostering fertility.
